KSU against NPR

SHILLONG, FEB 23: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU)  said it is against the state government’s decision to move ahead with the implementation of the National Population Registration (NPR) in the state. “We strongly protest against this move by the state government to implement the NPR in the state,” KSU general secretary Auguster Jyrwa said in a statement on Monday.

The decision to oppose the government’s decision to implement NPR  came after the ruling passed by the Meghalaya high court last year that questioned the powers and functions of the traditional heads in the state.

“The ruling by the High Court has discouraged the traditional heads from participating or involving in any prorammes of both state and central governments,” Jyrwa said.

Jyrwa also informed the recent meeting of the Synjuk Ki Rangbah Shnong (SRS), a conglomeration of traditional heads from Shillong, has demanded the government comes out clear on the status of the powers of the traditional institutions in the state.

“In view of this, we demanded the state government to put on hold its proposed move to implement the NPR till such time that the issue relating to traditional institutions is resolved,” Jyrwa said adding  that the demand has been made because only the traditional institutions can act as watchdog in ensuring that the programme is smoothly implemented.

Jyrwa also appealed to all the traditional heads in Khasi – Jaintia hills to see that no enrollment takes place under the NPR in their respective jurisdictions to ensure that illegal immigrants do not get to enroll themselves through this programme.- By Our Reporter
