SHILLONG, JUL 22: India’s sole finalist at the World Championships of Performing Arts 2026 returned home with a big haul, as Kitkupar Nongsiej from Meghalaya secured three gold medals, two bronze medals and the First Place Scholarship at the global event held in Las Vegas.
The week-long championship concluded on Monday with a grand awards night, bringing together young performers from over 70 countries.
While the Grand Champion Performer of the World title went to another contestant, Nongsiej emerged as one of the standout representatives for India.
Competing across vocal categories, the 17-year-old impressed the international jury with his range and stage presence.
He clinched two golds and two bronzes for his performances in different song genres.
Nongsiej also earned another gold for being named among the Top Five Vocalists in the Vocalist of the World Championship — a category that recognizes the most exceptional singers at WCOPA.
His biggest recognition came in the form of the First Place Scholarship Award, given to performers identified as having outstanding artistic potential.
The scholarship is expected to support advanced training and international performance opportunities for the young artist.
Nongsiej’s journey from Shillong to the world stage has drawn wide appreciation back home. Teachers, mentors and the Don Bosco community hailed his performance as a reflection of years of disciplined practice and dedication.
Though he missed out on the overall Grand Champion crown, his medal tally and scholarship win have positioned him among India’s most promising young vocalists.
