Shillong, Nov 30: Kulbir Kishan, director general (prisons), took over as the new Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) Friday evening from acting DGP Rajiv Mehta who has gone on deputation to the center. This is the second stint of Kishan as Meghalaya DGP.
A 1976 batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre IPS officer, Kishan has take over as the Meghalaya DGP at a very crucial stage when the election to the Meghalaya assembly is just two months away and militancy in Garo hills is at its peak giving rise to the perception that militants might try and disrupt holding a free and fair election in Garo hills region of Meghalaya.
Kishan acknowledged that the police have a daunting task ahead to see that the assembly elections is held without any hindrance from any groups. He told reporters after formally taking over the mantle of the Meghalaya DGP Friday evening that his priority would be to deal with rising militancy in Garo hills, law and order problem trying to put a stop to rising crimes against women. He said these are the major challenges before him as the DGP.
Lauding the police force of Meghalaya as an “outstanding lot”, Kishan said the force is second to none in the country. He said, “The Meghalaya police have faced the challenges in the past and came out successfully and I am sure if we work with our hearts, brains and muscles, we
will overcome all the challenges.”
Expressing concern on the militant activities in the five districts of Garo Hills, Kishan warned that militants should not interfere in the electioneering process even as he said there are
different ways to solve problems in a democratic country.
Kishan, however, said, “We can’t resolve difference through the barrel of a gun. They (militants) should eschew violence and come for talks or whatever… we have to ensure that the sanctity of the electoral process is maintained.” – By Our Reporter
