SHILLONG, APR 23: The Khun Hynñiewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) has suggested to the union government to establish a ‘Khasi Regiment’ in the Indian army for bringing a sense of integration and patriotism among the Khasi youths.The KHNAM representatives put their demand when they met BJP national president Amit Shah on Wednesday.
Giving example of Assam Regiment and Naga Regiment created by the Indian army, KHNAM president Pyndapborthiaw Saibon told reporters that a Khasi Regiment will not only solve unemployment problem but also bring a sense of inclusion and patriotism among the youth and the people of the state.
“This will also help to bridge the gap and bring about a change in the mindset of the people of the state,” Saibon said.
Among other issues the KHNAM took up with Shah were the issues of influx, law and order problem, opposition against uranium mining, functioning of autonomous district council particularly in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and the need to invoke anti-defection law in all district councils in the state to prevent defection of MDCs, boundary commission and to resolve inter-state boundary dispute.
Saibon also informed that KHNAM has requested Shah to impress upon the centre to appoint a full-fledged governor for Meghalaya as the present government is holding charge of four other states, Bihar, West Bengal, Meghalaya and Mizoram.- By Our Reporter
