KHNAM eyes 10 seats

SHILLONG, JAN 10: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awaking Movement (KHNAM) has decided to contest in 10 Assembly seats, but is yet to take a decision on the names of the candidates.

KHNAM secretary Pyndap Saibon told ohmeghalaya.com on Thursday that the names of the candidates will be finalised by the end of this month. Saibon also did not reveal the constituencies that the party intends to contest from in the ensuing elections.

The Trinamul Congress is also yet to decide on the names of its candidates for the Assembly polls. Trinamul’s Meghalaya unit secretary Pyntngen Lyngskor said the party will be fielding candidates from seats it considers are winnable. “I am presently in Calcutta finalising the list of candidates. We will be announcing the names of at least five candidates next week. The second list of candidates will be declared later,” he said on phone from the West Bengal capital.

The Mamata Banerjee-headed Trinamul, of course, is not new to Meghalaya politics. In fact, former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno A Sangma had contested the parliamentary election on a Trinamul ticket some years back. Owing to differences with other members of the party, he left the party to rejoin the NCP.

The NCP, too, is yet to finalise the names of its candidates. NCP coordinator Sanbor Shulai was supposed to announce the names after the party’s national convention, but has failed to do so till date. (By Our Reporter)
