SHILLONG, JAN 24: The state government on Tuesday assured to take necessary steps to make Khasi a compulsory subject in the schools’ higher secondary level in the state. The assurance was made by the Minister in-charge Higher & Technical Education Roshan Warjri to a delegation of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), which met her on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, HYC general secretary Robertjune Kharjahrin said, “We have reiterated our demand that Khasi should be made compulsory, to which the minister assured to take necessary steps.”
He said that the Council has also expressed its concern over the inquiry report by the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBOSE) which stated that many colleges have even felt it not necessary to appoint Khasi teachers.
“On this, the minister informed that soon she would convened a meeting with the MBOSE officials to re-examine its notification on declaring Khasi as an optional subject,” Kharjahrin said.
The other demands of the council is including the history of Meghalaya especially Hynniewtrep and poems written by Khasi authors in the school syllabus and curriculum.
