Shillong, Oct 11: In yet another setback for the Meghalaya unit of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) after eleven party legislators merged with the National People’s Party (NPP) former Rajya Sabha MP and the party central observer for north east states and West Bengal Robert Kharshiing resigned from the party Thursday morning.
Kharshiing cited his deteriorating health condition as the reason for his decision to resign from the party.
In a letter addressed to NCP national president Sharad Pawar and general secretary Praful Patel, Kharshiing wrote, “In spite of my best intentions of serving the party, my health condition is not allowing me to continue as my sugar level has risen to a dangerous level.”
Kharshiing said that the doctors have advised him to go for a series of tests, intensive care and complete rest with no stress or strain until the sugar stabilizes. In the letter he said, “As you are aware, the hurly-burly of electoral politics do not permit this as elections in Meghalaya are due in five months and my health just cannot bear the strain.”
Kharshiing resignation is a major blow to the Meghalaya unit of the NCP as it is trying to find its feet after eleven legislators including PA Sangma left the party to merged with the NPP.
The NCP has decided to contest all the sixty assembly seats in Meghalaya in the forthcoming assembly election slated for early next year.- By Our Reporter
