SHILLONG, AUG 28: The chief executive member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Hispreaching Son Shylla today said so far nobody from the transgender community has approach the Council for recognition.
“We have not been approach by anybody from the community with regards to the issue of providing recognition to the (tribal) transgenders,” Shylla told reporters here on Tuesday.
He was clarifying on his statement made after the executive committee meeting held yesterday that the Council do not recognize people from the transgender community and that it only recognizes the existence of males and females.
However, the Meghalaya Cabinet on January earlier this year had approved the amendment of the Meghalaya Registration of Birth and Death Rules, 1999, for inclusion of transgender or third gender option against sex column in birth or death certificates.
Asked, the KHADC chief however said that the executive committee will examine the matter if people from such community approach the Council.
“If they (transgenders) us, we will definitely examine the matter as per provisions of the law and accordingly take a call,” he added.
Whether the KHAD (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Bill, which seeks to strip the Schedule Tribe status of Khasi women who marries non-Khasi men and their offsprings, be applicable to transgenders, Shylla however said that the matter will also be examined by the executive committee.
