SHILLONG, JUNE 23: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) budget session got underway on Monday with the Chief Executive Member (CEM) Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit presenting a deficit budget of Rs 45, 890 for 2014-2015.
“The total estimated budget is Rs 104, 38, 26, 090 which is however higher than the expected revenue to be generated by the council which pegged at Rs 104, 37, 80, 200,” Basaiawmoit said while placing the budget before the house.
Stating that there is a deficit of Rs 45, 890, Basaiawmoit, however, assured that the executive committee would try its best to pull on its resources to improve the financial position of the council.
Spelling out some of the commitments by his EC, Basaiawmoit informed that executive committee is committed to preserve and protect the forests (Law Adong (protected forest) and Law Kyntang (sacred forests)” in the different parts of Khasi Hills region.
He said, “The executive committee with the support and cooperation of the traditional heads including Syiem and Myntri has for the first time declared the Law Syiem located at Lum Mawpat as “Law Adong” on June 5.”
Pointing out despite of the many challenges faced by the council, he said, “The executive committee is hopeful to overcome the challenges with the support and cooperation of all the members of the house on how to improve the functioning of the council.”
He however informed that the revenue generation of the council has decreased due to irregular release of the council’s share by the state government in term of major, mine minerals and motor vehicles.
“On this matter, I have met the state government’s authorities concern and submitted a letter on the need to speed up in the release of the share of the council,” he said.
Meanwhile, the discussion on the proposed estimate would be place before the floor of the house on June 26, before the budget is passed.- By Our Reporter
