SHILLONG, APR 12: The Social Organizations of Meghalaya against Land Aleination (SOMALA) on Tuesday demanded that the state government keep in abeyance the implementation of the National Population Register (NPR) in the state.
“We urged the state government to go slow with the sensitive issue until it is found acceptable to the tribal of Meghalaya on whose behalf the state is created for,” SOMALA convener W Anthony said in a statement.
His statement came as a reaction to reports indicating that the state government had announced that the enrolment for NPR will start from May-June.
Anthony said that the organization had submitted a petition last year to the Union Minister of State for Home with a request to the centre to keep in abeyance the implementation of the NPR in the Sixth Schedule area of Meghalaya until the fate of illegal influx is sorted out.
He also pointed out that the during the election campaign in Assam the question of containment of illegal immigrants was a prime agenda which unfortunately does not appear to be so in Meghalaya.-By Our Reporter
