SHILLONG, SEPT 18: The Khasi Authors Society (KAS) will organize a public rally in the state capital on September 22, to pressurize the Centre government to implement the demand for inclusion of Khasi language in the Eight Schedule to the Constitution of India.
Informing this here on Tuesday, KAS general secretary Ronald Peel Kharshiing said that the public rally will commence with a procession from Madan Iewrynghep (Fire brigade ground) towards Malki ground, where the public address on the issue will be held.
Stating that the programme is one of strategies to convince the Centre to fulfil the demand, Kharshiing said the ongoing struggle for constitutional recognition of Khasi language in the Sixth Scheduled to the Constitution of India since 1979.
According to him, there have been several delegation, intellectual articulation and public motivation for the cause of the Khasi language based on the genuine credibility and excellence in literary growth, which is felt deserving for such legitimate demand.
“In the course of struggle, we have achieved the Associate Official Language status through State legislation in 2005. Khasi language has been a subject for higher studies at the Calcutta University and Gauhati University since the pre and post-independence period and at the North Eastern Hill University up to Ph D level,” he said.
Moreover, the general secretary stated that there have been numerous publications of Khasi books on diverse subjects of academic and public consumption, apart from many seminar papers and scholastic research in the local, national and international academia.
