SHILLONG, AUG 31: KAM Meghalaya, which identifies itself as a political platform on Wednesday announced Wanpynhun Kharsyntiew as its candidate from 16 East Shillong constituency for the upcoming 2023 assembly elections in the state.
So far, KAM has announced three candidates which also include its founding leaders, Angela Rangad, who will contest from South Shillong and Kyrsoi Pyrtuh from North Shillong constituency.
Speaking to media persons, Wanpynhun Kharsyntiew said that even though being an educated person, she had always been involved in a social movement in the state by working with people from all walks of life especially with the domestic workers for the past 18 years.
Kharsyntiew said that Meghalaya had attained its 50 years of statehood yet till date there is not even a single law that has been implemented by the state government in favor of the unorganized sector workers of the state.
‘I myself have experienced all types of working with the weakest section of the society especially with the unorganized sector workers as I was a domestic worker in the past hence my motive to contest the 2023 election is to fight for their welfare and their” said Kharsyntiew.
Kharsyntiew said that KAM shared an idea of coming together for social movements by sharing common struggles with the people especially with the weakest section of the society to bring about political changes in order to collectively reclaim democracy and the rights of the common people or the working class.
She alleged that the working classes in the state, especially the unorganized sector in the state, are suffering which indicates that the state government had not rightly implemented the schemes for the welfare of the working class.
“I have come to know that very few people know about the existence of the daily wage board or the benefits of registering themselves in the board which means that means here, I feel that the government has at one part failed to rightly implement the welfare schemes which is meant for the poor and the downtrodden especially the unorganized sector workers” she alleged.
Kharsyntiew said that when we look at the education system in Meghalaya, the teachers who are responsible to shape the future of the children are forced to come to the streets to demand their salary and this has affected the students who have missed important lessons in schools.
She added that the state has reached it 50th year, yet the state does not have even a single State University which compels the youths of the state to seek higher education outside the state.
“Now it is time for the people not only from 16 East Shillong but all over across the state to come along and stand together to fight and demands for the rights, if you we do not claim it now, then when because the future belongs to us and the future belongs to each and everyone” she added.
