SHILLONG, DEC 3: Newly elected Nongstoin HSPDP legislator Diosstarness Jyndiang was sworn in on Thursday and took a pledge to follow the footsteps of his predecessor and party president late Hopingstone Lyngdog by continuing to voice the need for resolving the age old inter-state border dispute and opposition to uranium mining.
Jyndiang, who defeated ruling Congress candidate Gabriel Wahlang in the November 21 bye-elections held in Nongstoin constituency in West Khasi hills took oath of office and secrecy administered by the Speaker Abu Taher Mondal at the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
The bye-election was necessitated following the death of the HSPDP supremo Hopingstone Lyngdoh, who was one of the oldest and longest serving legislators in the state, on September this year.
The swearing in ceremony was also attended by deputy chief minister RC Laloo, home minister Roshan Warjri, sports minister Zenith Sangma and PWD minister Sniawbhalang Dhar.
Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) chief Ardent M Basaiawmoit, party’s MDC KP Pangniang were among others besides the family members and supporters of Jyndiang present during the swearing in ceremony.
Speaking to reporters at the sideline of the ceremony, Jyndiang, a first time legislator said, “I want to follow the footsteps of late Lyngdoh and I desire to fulfill his last wishes by continuing to voice issue related to the inter-state border dispute with Assam in the floor of the assembly.”
He said late Lyngdoh, a doyen of Meghalaya politics, had been opposing against the alleged encroachment of the Assam government into the state.
Stating that he would also continue to oppose any attempt to allow Uranium mining in the state especially in Mawthabah area under his constituency, Jyndiang said, “This is also one of the main issues that have been raised by Lyngdoh and the party. We are still opposing against any move to mine uranium.”- By Our Reporter
