SHILLONG, APR 4: In a jolt to the United Democratic Party (UDP), over 40 leaders and workers from its different units under West Shillong Constituency on Tuesday joined the Congress party.
They were welcomed by the Shillong West Block Congress Committee (SWBCC) president Mohendro Rapsang at a gathering held in the city on Tuesday.
Addressing newsmen, Rapsang said the leaders which most of them are from the UDP have decided to join and support the party in the upcoming 2018 state elections.
It may be mentioned here, the SWBCC chief was defeated by the sitting UDP legislator and working president Paul Lyngdoh by a thin margin of 481 votes in the last 2013 Assembly elections.
Expressing optimism to win in the upcoming election, he said, “This time I have a good chance with lots of new faces and supporters coming in to support the party.”
He said that upliftment of the economic condition of the poor is one of his main priorities besides ensuring quality and better education system in the state.
Asked, Rapsang said though he is still a congress man but in politics according to him can change at any time.
A former general secretary of the UDP Lama Villa Unit Bary Thangkhiew, who refused to comment on the main reason against the sitting MLA, only pointed out her dislike on his style of functioning.
“We have nothing to say against him (Lyngdoh) but we want a new leader in the constituency,” she said while praising Rapsang as a man who is willing to help the poor.
