Job & Skill fest draws youths

SHILLONG,MAY 28: Two  days Skill Fest cum Job Fair kick-started on Thursday at U Soso Tham, auditorium with many youngsters visiting the Vocational Trainers Provider stalls put up in the premises for their benefits

Organized by the Directorate of Employment & Craftsmen Training of the state Labour department and the Union Ministry of Labour, the job fest is being participated by around 30 VTPs from around the country.

Meghalaya labour minister M Ampareen Lyngdoh inaugurated the job fest in the presence of Labour department principal secretary MS Rao and Employment & Craftsmen Training director B Hajong on Thursday.

The job fair saw a huge participation from the youths.

The 30 VTPs provides skill training and placement in different fields like hospitality industry, spa & beauty, health care, bakery masonry, security, construction, security and IT sector.

Speaking during the inaugural function, minister M Ampareen Lyngdoh said that in the present world, young people should know that there are lots of competitions and as such there has been instances where young people tends to give up on themselves. She said, “Don’t get discouraged and instead of looking around for employment in Government offices, the youths must grab every opportunity and attend various skill development programmes that are being made available to them.”

She also said that the central and state government have taken up this initiative to empower the youths, to nurture and to prepare them to gain self employment. Seeing the interest and the huge participation of the young people at the Skill Fest she expressed her happiness and encouraged them to take hold of the opportunity and register themselves for various skill development programmes.

During his welcome address Labour department principal secretary MS Rao said that last year around 1000 youths was registered under the various skill development programmes during the Skill Fest, 2014. He also said that this year the Skill Fest cum Job Fair was held in all the 11 Districts of the State.

Rao informed that excluding East Khasi hills, a total of around 4500 youths have already been registered from the other 10 Districts of the State. The training period will be from 3-6 months wherein those youths selected to undergo training outside the state will be provided with a minimum remuneration of Rs. 10,000 per month besides free food and lodging, he added.

Speaking to this website Employment & Craftsmen Training director B Hajong informed that during the last one and half years 1000 youths from the state have got job placement in different sector across the country. He expressed satisfaction over the number of placement and felt that it will only get bigger every year.- By Our Reporter
