SHILLONG, JUNE 17: Ninety-five years old Islamia Secondary School located in Police Bazaar  was sealed by the district administration on Wednesday as part of the continuing action on the high rise building violating the building by laws of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

The sudden sealing off of the building caught the 300 students of the school unaware and they were shocked to see the school gate under lock and key. Most of the students returned home.

Students could not appear for their ongoing ‘internal-examination’ after the school building was sealed by a committee constituted by an order of the Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday evening.

The school is one among the twenty high-rise buildings sealed by the committee after they were found to have violate the building by-laws of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

The school authority has assured the students of making alternative arrangement within a period of two days. The school’s half-yearly examination had commenced on June 15 and slated to conclude on June 29.

Stating that the internal test was totally disrupted affecting the students, school’s principal Dilip Kumar Dutta said, “Since the sealing was done in the evening, it was not possible for the school authority to convey this to the students and their parents at night.

Later, the school authority had also met the Sub-Divisional School Education Officer (SDSEO) of East Khasi hills district informing about the present situation.

“We have assured the education authority that immediate alternative arrangement will be made within two days,” Dutta said while informing that this will ensure that the students can complete their examination.

Established in the year 1920, the school authority decided to have a new building, of which the construction was started in 2012.

Meanwhile, the school authority has also filed an appeal to the Meghalaya High Court on the matter. Dutta said, “We have filed an appeal to the Court on June 15,” the principal informed.

The high court will hear the appeal for hearting June 18.- By Our Reporter
