Invite traditional heads

SHILLONG, SEPT 4: The East Jaintia National Council (EJNC) – central council- on Friday today suggested the state government to invite the traditional chiefs in the proposed all political parties meeting slated for September 8.

“It is important to include the traditional chiefs for their views with regards to whether to allow the ordinance to have its natural death or to wait for the Village Administration Bills (VABs) passed by the KHADC and JHADC to become acts,” EJNC general secretary Sambormi Lyngdoh said in a statement issued on Friday.

Earlier, the state cabinet had decided to convene an all political parties meeting to discuss the issues related to the proposed new draft bill, ordinance and VABs, concerning empowerment of the traditional institutions and traditional headmen in the state.

According to him, the state government should also take the traditional headmen from the Khasi and Jaintia hills region into consideration keeping in mind that Meghalaya is a democratic state.

“We feel that voice of the people is the ultimate decision,” Lyngdoh said.

The EJNC also urged the state government to find out ways and means to ensure that the ban on coal mining imposed by the National Green Tribunal is lifted from Meghalaya.

According to him, the state is facing financial crisis due to the ban which has not only affected the revenue generation and the exchequer of the state government but has affect the economy of the people of the state.-By Our Reporter
