International Day of the Girl Child held in the city

SHILLONG, OCT 11: A girl child needs more care and attention especially  in the field of education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care, and protection from discrimination, violence and child marriage said Theilin Phanbuh,  chairperson of Meghalaya State Women Commission at a function held at  Shillong to observed International Day of the Girl Child on Friday.

Stating that girl child needs support and opportunity from all side, Phanbuh, who graced the function as the chief guest pointed out that increased awareness about inequality face by girls needs to be highlighted by the society at large.

The observation was organized by the state social welfare department on the theme “Innovating for girl education” at state central library, arts and culture hall.

HM Shangpliang, director of social welfare department, in his introductory speech informed that October 11 every year is observed as International Day of the Girl Child as declared by the United Nations in 2011.

Informing that the first International Girl Child Day was observed in 2012, Shangpliang said that this year observation focus on the theme Innovating for girl education is to empower  girls who are critical for the economic growth and eradication of poverty, adding  that this observation may help in encouraging meaningful participation of girls in  all facets of life.

Others present on the occasion includes CN Marak, deputy director of  social welfare department, LM Momin, assistant director of social welfare and K Marbaniang, district social welfare officer of East Khasi hills.

The programme saw the attendance of girls from government Shelter Home for Girl, SOS Village, Umiam, Anne Margareth Barr, Kharang,East Khasi Hills, A.W. Thomas Children Home, Shillong and St. Marys Convent Orphanage, Shillong.
The day long programme includes lecture on Life Skills Education by J War, Faculty Allied Health department, Martin Luther Christian University, and counseling by B Diengdoh, medical social worker of NEIGRIHMS.- By Our Reporter
