SHILLONG, JAN 31: The second day for filing of nomination papers for the February 23 Meghalaya assembly elections saw as many as seven Independent and three Congress candidates filing their nominations taking the total of those who filed their nomination to contest the upcoming polls to twenty-two.
Among those who filed the nomination papers were a father and son duo, Meghalaya assembly speaker Charles Pyngrope and his son David Nongrum. Pyngrope filed his nomination as Congress candidate for the Nongthymmai constituency while his son is contesting as an Independent from Mawrynkneng constituency after he was overlooked for the Congress ticket in favour of Pynehborlang Mukhim, a close aide of Shillong Lok Sabha MP Vincent Pala.
The other two Congress candidates who filed their nomination on Thursday were parliamentary secretary and Sohra candidate, Phlour W Khongjee and Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) member of district council and party’s Nongkrem candidate Lambor Malngiang
In Ri Bhoi district, out of four independent candidates, Lurshai Wahlang, Donlang Sohklet and Joberwel Lapang filed their nomination papers to contest the Umsning assembly seat while Stanleywiss Rymbai filed for the Umroi constituency.
In West Garo hills, Independent candidates for North Tura Kismet A Sangma and Subir M Marak who is contesting the Rangsakona seat also filed their nomination papers in Tura.- By Our Reporter
