SHILLONG, MAR 5: Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma asked NEIGRIHMS’ management to increase MBBS seats from 50 to 100 and also requested them to pursue the matter seriously with the union government so that the required infrastructure is made available to the institute.
Addressing the third annual day function of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health & Medical Sciences on Thursday, Sangma also gave away certificates to the outgoing MBBS graduates, B.Sc Nursing graduates and the Post-Graduates along with Prof. AG Ahangar, the Institute’s director.
Reiterating the government’s ambitious plan of making Meghalaya a destination for health, education and showcasing of its rich cultural heritage, Sangma said that almost 80 percent of the successful people of the northeast he came across were the products of Shillong.
Sangma informed that his government is making all efforts to restore the city as educational centre for all the youth of the region.
Recalling the magnanimity of former prime minister late Rajiv Gandhi in setting up NEIGRIHMS to bridge the huge gap in health services in the region, Sangma stated that the State and the institute must make optimum use of this resource and also stressed the need to focus on this crucial sector and see how providing quality health care for the people can become sustainable.
Sangma also said that his government is trying its best to improve the human development index and also spoke about the Megha Health Insurance Scheme to take care of the health expenses of the people covering the whole population of the state.
Sangma also emphasized on the need to provide the same kind of support given to public health also to private health sector also and the need for more research and study by the institute saying as the state is grappling around for vaccines for all kinds of diseases that are around us.
Sangma urged for more professionals to come and work for the institute informing that very soon he would be laying the foundation stone for International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture nearby. He urged young medical professionals to see how their knowledge and skill can be of best use to people in the region.
Earlier, the former AIIMS director and Chair-Professor, Medical Education & Research & Director-General, Public Health, Amity University Prof. RC Deka, who was the guest of honour, gave the Indira Gandhi oration on building the reputation of the Institute, stressing that competence and confidence with compassion is a must for medical professionals.- By Our Reporter
