SHILLONG, JULY 14: Demanding the enhancement of the monthly unemployment allowance from Rs 500 to Rs 5000, the Khasi Disabilities Association (KDA) on Monday requested the Meghalaya government to implement the three percent reservation policy for persons with disabilities as announced by the union government besides extending other facilities due to them under the law.
In a memorandum submitted to the Meghalaya social welfare department minister Deborah C Marak on Monday, the KDA representatives also expressed disbelieve that the Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY) meant for persons with disabilities are not availed by those for whom and therefore requested the minister to ensure that the government consider application for the IAY scheme that comes through disability certificate and not the BPL list.
In the 12-points memorandum, the KDA requested to the minister for increment of the chief minister’s scheme for social assistant meant for the differently abled persons and also to provide them with the Megha Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS) cards so that they can derive medical benefit from this particular scheme.
Pointing out that many persons with disabilities also excels in studies, the KDA requested the state government to find ways for reservation of seats in different educational institutions and also establish separate schools and colleges with nominal admission and monthly fees. The association also felt that the state government should give monthly scholarship ad revise it accordingly.
The KDA also requested the minister to consider giving 3 percent of allotment of the taxi permit to the persons with disabilities with any restriction and also to grant them various government schemes deem fit for them so that they can become financially independent.- By Our Reporter
