Implement 10% weightage fully: students to NEHU

SHILLONG, OCT 20: Students of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Thursday staged a protest rally demanding full implementation of the 10 per cent weightage reserved for students from Meghalaya, who are seeking admission in the University.

Organized under the banner of the Khasi Students Union (KSU) and NEHU Students’ Union, the protesters marched to a multi-use convention hall, where the vice chancellor of NEHU was holding the Academic Council to discuss the 10% weightage.

In their memorandum to the chief minister Conrad K Sangma, the student bodies had pointed out that according to clause 5 of RC-1 under the ordinance OC-1 of the North Eastern Hill University, the Weightage to be given to Graduates from NEHU affiliated colleges and Graduates who are from Universities other than NEHU but who are domiciles of Meghalaya will be 10%.

They demanded that the weightage should be added to the CUET score as per NEHU Ordinance.

They also sought the CM’s intervention into the matter alleging that there is an attempt to misinterpret the rules by contending that a weightage of 10 marks will be added instead of 10% as per the Ordinance.

Speaking to media persons, NEHUSU finance secretary Wailad Siangshai alleged that there is a move to do away with the 10% weightage reserved for local students from the state by instead adding the 10 marks for admission to the university.

Wailad said that if the NEHU do away with the 10%, many local students will face difficulties in getting admission in NEHU especially in future when CUET will be made compulsory for getting any admission in central university.

He added that the local students will not let NEHU do away with the 10% as it will be disadvantageous for local students to compete with other students from other states of the country who seek admission in NEHU.
