SHILLONG, OCT 10: The Department of Social Welfare in collaboration with District Medical & Health Office, East Khasi Hills, Child Development Project Office, Urban ICDS Project, Shillong and Bansara Eye Care Centre, Shillong today celebrated the International Day of Older Persons at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong.
The programme was attended by the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills, P S Dkhar as the Chief Guest.
In his speech, the Deputy Commissioner said that grandparents and parents bring joy, warmth and security to our homes and families and we cannot forget their contribution to the family and the society. He said that the younger generation needs the guidance and wisdom of grandparents and parents who, through their life experiences, taught us the principles of life. “As we celebrate this day, let us also remember their sacrifices to guarantee that their children have a successful life. Therefore, it is our responsibility to ensure that older persons can live a life of dignity by giving them the love, care, respect.
The Chief Guest also felicitated to the senior most citizen, Shri D Mawrie of Malki Wahkdait and distributed gifts to nine other senior citizens.
Earlier in the day, a free medical and eye check-up was conducted to celebrate the day.
