SHILLONG, AUG 10: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Thursday urged the State government to take steps to develop two important power projects in the South West Khasi Hills District, which have earlier been scrapped.
In a memorandum to the Power Minister AT Mondal, HYC-SWKH president Arbok Kharjahrin said, “We request you to kindly take steps for re-initiating the Rangmaw Hydel Project and the Kynshi Hydel Project Stage-2 at the earliest for the benefit of the State as a whole.”
He said that the State government in 2010, had signed the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Sew Energy Ltd for implementation of the 65MW Rangmaw Hydro Electric project. However in 2020, this MoA was cancelled and since then no steps was taken to revive the said project.
“We are of the opinion that Rangmaw Hydel Project is one of the important Hydel power projects in South West Khasi Hills District and if this project becomes a reality it will be a great blessing for the people of the District and the State as a whole,” he said.
Kharjahrin also said that the State government had also signed an MoA with the Jaypee Meghalaya Power Ltd, New Delhi for setting up of the Kynshi stage-II HE project (325 MW) .
However, this project was cancelled by the State Government after the Company expressed its inability to continue with the project and also as per the media report it was cancelled mainly due to the presence of uranium deposits in the area.
“We firmly believe that this project is strategically important to the District and the State as a whole and we request you to kindly take steps for re-initiating the project at the earliest,” he said.
The HYC leader also suggested the government develop a thermal power plant in the district, which is rich in coal production. This will not only benefit the entire state in terms of power generation but it will also help the people involved in coal business as well as creating employment opportunities for the people of the district.
Meanwhile, the HYC has also requested the state government to consider setting up one more C&RD Block in the district, which at present has two blocks – Ranikor and Mawkyrwat.
Kharjahrin said that the new block should preferably be set up at Wahkaji or Umdohlun area. The people residing in the areas like Wahkaji, Phalngdiloin, Myriem, Warsanlyngdoh, etc are facing a lot of problems as these areas are far flung from both Ranikor and Mawkyrwat.
