SHILLONG, MAY 11: Vivek Narwani and his parents were arrested for not only forcing his wife to abort twice because she could not give them a son but also for demanding money from her parents and physically intimidating her. The parents were however released because of old age but Narwani has been remanded in fourteen days judicial custody after he completed to five days in police custody.
The incident took place in Mumbai, but Narwani’s wife who is from Shillong filed an FIR here against her husband and in-laws.
Narwani was arrested based on FIR and was in five days police custody Now the accused his cooling his heels in jail as the judicial magistrate KML Nongbri had remanded him to fourteen days judicial custody.
According to the FIR filed by Narwani’s wife, she was mentally and physically tortured by four people which includes her husband, his parents and sister-in-law . Narwani parents were released because of old age and his sister was not arrested as her name did not reflect in the FIR.
Public prosecutor IC Jha told reporters outside the CJM court on Saturday that there are enough evidences at this stage to proceed with the case.
“At this preliminary stage of investigation, it is prima facie as per documentary evidence and statement recorded from the complainant as well as the accused, that there is enough evidence to proceed with the case,” Jha said.
Jha claimed that the case is on the right track. However he added that in criminal cases the defense would generally take advantage of the technical mistakes as in Meghalaya the investigating agency is not very well equipped and trained because there is no independent investigating cell.
Narrating her ordeal Bavna said that though her life looks good on the outside but she only knows the ordeal she has to go through She alleged, “When I got engaged everything seemed to be alright but on the very first day of the marriage I realized that this man was an alcoholic, a womanizer and a gambler and my in-laws also turned out to be greedy, as they kept on making unreasonable demands for cash and jewelry.”.
Showing a scar on her leg as evidence, Bavna also alleged that in the first year of the marriage her husband threw her off a moving vehicle and that is how she got the scar.
Narrating in details Bavna said the nightmare would not stop as her husband would hardly came home and when she inquired, her in-laws would beat her. She claims, “My mother-in-law even slashed my wrist once,” Bavna said.
Bavna also said that the beating would never cease and when she delivered a baby girl, her husband and in-laws insulted her in the hospital and later on she was forced to have two abortions because she carried female foetus.
Bavna revealed that all expenses for her daughters’ right from the milk to their schooling have been borne by my father but to the outside world it may appear as if her in-laws were taking care of her and the children. She also said that the in-laws wanted a mutual consent for divorce if her father paid for the flat she was staying and even told her that they would get their son married elsewhere so that he can have a boy child.
But Bavna refused and came to Shillong, her home town, as she felt that her in-laws cannot bribe the police in this state if she files a case against her husband and in-laws.
In Mumbai, she alleged, her in-laws and her husband threaten that they would get her and her daughters raped.-By Our Reporter
