Shillong, August 20: Former Meghalaya deputy chief minister John Deng Pohrmen was laid to rest Monday afternoon at Laitumkhrah Catholic Cemetery.
Braving intermittent shower hundreds of his admirers, friends, relatives and political colleagues attended his funeral. Meghalaya deputy chief minister Bindo M Lanong, Urban Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, SAD minister JA Lyngdoh and War-Jaintia legislator Lahkmen Rymbui also came to pay his last rest.
Pohrem’s political party Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president DD Lapang, in whose cabinet Pohrmen had served many times, was also present.
Lapang described the eighty- six year Pohrmen as a responsible, accommodative and humble leader. He said he was a “friend of all.”
Like all the political leaders in Meghalaya, Pohrmen who was a school teacher, had plunged into politics and joined the hills state movement. His initiation to politics was from the All Party’s Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC). Later he joined the Congress party along with other APHLC leaders.
In his illustrious political career, Pohrmen held many important posts right from being the Chief Executive Member of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) to cabinet minister and deputy chief minister.
