SHILLONG, MAR 20: Meghalaya has a huge shortfall of meat production with beef falling short by 8932 and pork by 1395 tons annually even as Meghalaya Animal Husbandry & Veterinary minister Deborah Marak assured that the government is trying its best to meet the 13, 988 tons of requirement for beef and 8704 tons for pork every year.

Replying to a zero hours question Marak told the state assembly during the ongoing budget session on Wednesday that the government is taking steps to address the huge shortfall of meats and informed, “The government has proposed to established new cattle farm in Resubelpara and pig farm in Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi hills.”

Marak also told the assembly that the government would also set up vocational training centers at Upper Shillong in East Khasi hills and Williamnagar in East Garo hills district besides dispensary for intensive health care and increase the subsidy to cattle farmers.

Answering to a query raised by  NPP legislator Nihim D Shira with regards to the number of buffaloes, Marak replied that there is only one buffalo farm in the state located in Songsak that has a total of 22, 627 buffaloes.

Shira, however, expressed dissatisfaction at the reply and claimed that the minister was misleading the house by giving wrong information. He said, “My house is not very far from the farm and not even 100 buffaloes are there in the farm.”

Marak assured that she is ready to examine and would look into the matter if the figure provided to her was wrong and accordingly will inform the concerned legislator.- By Our Reporter
