SHILLONG, SEPT 13: The Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) today expressed keen interest to have pre-poll alliance with the United Democratic Party (UDP) ahead of the 2019 elections to the Khasi and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council.
“We want to ensure that the regional forces in the state are united and we hope that the UDP will work together with us in the upcoming MDC elections,” HSPDP East Khasi Hills Unit president and former minister Martle M Mukhim told reporters after a meeting held here on Thursday.
The two regional political parties had earlier forged a pre-poll alliance for contesting the 36 seats from Khasi and Jaintia Hills region during the February 27-Assembly polls this year.
However, the UDP could manage to secure only seven seats while the HSPDP with only two in the 60-member Assembly.
The two parties, which are partners of the six-party Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government led by the National People’s Party (NPP), had also formed the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA).
Stating that this is a ‘coalition era’, Mukhim, who had unsuccessfully contested the Assembly elections from Mawkynrew constituency, said, “We are fully committed to further strengthen the MDA government. We also appealed to all partners to work unitedly as family in the coalition government.”
Asked, the president said that today’s executive committee meeting was to discuss on the preparation for the upcoming general council meeting of East Khasi Hills Unit to be held on October 4.
HSPDP chief organizer and cabinet minister Samlin Malngiang on the other hand informed that the upcoming GEC meeting is part of the steps being taken to reorganize for strengthening the party ahead of the MDC elections.
“We have recently done it (reorganize) in West Khasi Hills District,” he said.
To another query, Samlin said that the party would soon take a call on whether to field candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to be held next year.
“The central executive committee of the party will take a decision on the matter whether to field any candidate for the Lok Sabha elections,” he stated.
