SHILLONG, SEPT 6: The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on the first day of the autumn session on Friday paid rich tribute to the Speaker late Dr Donkupar Roy and other political leaders in the country, who passed away recently.
Speaking at the obituary reference, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said that Dr Donkupar Roy was the architect of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
“He brought all the political parties (together) and laid a strong foundation of understanding, which continues till today,” he said.
He said all know about the contributions made by the late leader as Speaker, to his constituency, to his party and the million lives that he has touched adding “It is a great loss (to the state).”
The chief minister while remembering former union finance minister Arun Jaitley for his helping nature said that he was an intellectual man and a good orator.
Conrad also paid tribute to former union minister Sushma Swaraj and recalled how she treated him as her own son.
On the other hand, Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said Dr Donkupar was a sourse of wisdom and guidance to all the legislators. “We have loss a great friend and a leader. The vacuum created by him will take a long time to be filled,” he said.
Congress legislator from East Shillong Ampareen Lyngdoh said the Dr Donkupar has a great foresight for the survival of the regional forces as she praises how he had pioneered this government with great art.
Paying homage to the two women leaders of the country, Lyngdoh said Swaraj had given the BJP a new identity while Sheila Dixit, who was the longest serving chief minister of Delhi was associated with modernization of the national capital.
The House then observed two-minute silence as a mark of respect. After the obituary reference, Deputy Speaker Timothy D Shira adjourned the House for the day.
