SHILLONG, MAY 24: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Movement (HNYM) on Monday staged a protest against the alleged failure of the state government to provide any relief to the poor people who are badly hit by the total lockdown imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Three leaders of the organization led by its president Louis Dohtdong marched from their office to the main secretariat amid tight security.
Speaking to reporters, Dohtdong said the Conrad K Sangma-led state government has failed to extend any help to the poor people despite the present crisis
He said the government’s sudden decision to impose total lockdown has further affected the poor people who mostly are daily wage earners as they were not given the chance to prepare for such a situation.
“This has compelled us to take to the street to demand the government to do something for the poor people if not 100 percent but at least 30 percent,” Dohtdong said.
He said this is not the time for the government to pretend as if it is deaf but is the time to extend all possible help to the needy.
