SHILLONG, AUG 22: KHADC executive member in-charge Trade Antonio N War has claimed that the district council has no power to refuse issuing of trading license to non-tribal traders who have obtained the No objection certificates issued by the traditional headmen.
War was quoted saying this by the members of Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) Shillong Region during a press conference held at the Shillong Press Club here on Wednesday.
“We are shocked by the reply of the EM in-charge Trade that the KHADC has no power to refuse issuing of trading license to non-tribal traders once they get the NOC from the headmen,” HNYF-RC general secretary Faststar Kharmujai told reporters.
He said that the delegation of the organization had met the executive member to seek his intervention into the need to conduct checking and closing down of business establisments own by non-tribal who are without any trading license from the Council.
“We have also demanded the KHADC not to issue trading license on such trades and businesses which are being carried out by our indigenous people,” Kharmujai said while pointing out at the provisions of the Regulation of Trading by Non-Tribal Act.
He however said if such is the excuse given by War, the KHADC is suggested to instead empower the traditional headmen to issue the trading license. “If the KHADC do not implement the Act in letter and spirit, the HNYF will take a call to go ahead conduct checking against illegal trading by non-tribal on its own,” he said.
Meanwhile, the HNYF also urged the traditional headmen not to allow non-tribal traders without trading license to operate businesses within their respective jurisdictions.
