SHILLONG, FEB 13: The traffic branch of the Shillong police is contemplating to identify more roads which needed widening in order to reduce traffic congestion in the city.
“We will identify more roads for widening and accordingly submit proposals to the Public Works Department (PWD),” SP (Traffic) NK Syiem told reporters after a delegation of the Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF) met him on Monday.
He informed that earlier the Shillong traffic police had also initiated a similar exercise in which such roads have been widened to decongest the city.
The delegation of the HNYF central body had also requested the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills District to speed up implementing the scheme to decongest traffic in the city.
The HNYF felt there is need for people to give land for such exercise as the city is facing huge problem of traffic snarl.
They have also suggested the traffic police to identify proper embarkment and disembarkment points to ensure local taxis do not pick and drop passengers wherever they feel convenient.
On this, the SP said that the department will do its best to find out ways and means to reduce traffic congestion in and around the city.
Meanwhile, the traffic branch had recently implemented new traffic rules in which Hopkinson Road, Jacob’s Ladder Road and Boyce Road have been opened in reverse direction.
However the arrangement has gain less appreciation from the general public which expressed that the new rules will create more problem of traffic congestion when schools are reopened.
Asked, Syiem said that it is difficult to comment on the effectiveness of the new traffic arrangement.
“We are still studying this new traffic arrangement which is presently being implemented as a trial basis. We will take a call once schools are reopened,” he added.
