SHILLONG, APR 2: The banned militant outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) while extending support to the upcoming April 4-Khasi National Awakening Day called by the Khasi Students Union (KSU) urged the indigenous tribal to realize the need to protect and preserve the rich cultural traditions, roots and identity of the land.
“The day is not only for the KSU and other ngos but it is mandatory for all the people in the entire Hynniewtrep (Khasi-Jaintia) to remember and refresh their commitments towards preserving and protecting of our identity and our land,” HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement on Wednesday.
Nongtraw said that the HNLC is also of the view that the realization of the youths to call for unity of all indigenous people of the land is due to the Meghalaya government’s leniency allowing the non-indigenous outsiders to have a upper hand in the all round economic development in our tribal land.
On the other hands, Nongtraw said, “Our youths are lagging behind not because of poverty but because they are being enslaved and influenced by “foreign cultures” making them to to attend the various musical concerts rather than taking part on the issues concerning the state or even the upcoming national awakening day.”
He expressed concerned that indigenous people are being dominated and overpowered by outsiders in every nook and corner of the state especially in rural areas and also those in the border while pointing out that this was also seen even in the state’s capital.
“But what is more disheartening for the land is our own politicians,” Nongtraw said pointing out that even the urban affair minister Ampareen Lyngdoh dared to tag most of the areas as ‘Slum’ while failing to notice the various areas in her constituency (Laitumkhrah) are turning into ‘refugee colonies’ adding that the sitting MP has also failed tremendously to protect the people residing along interstate border with Assam.
Nongtraw was of the opinion that if the politicians and non-tribals are not giving the people to live in peace, the HNLC will also ensure that they don’t live in peace. He said it is the need hour to protest against all such forces that are trying to wipe away the Khasi identity from the Hynniewtrep land.- By Our Reporter
