SHILLONG, MAR 1: The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) today termed the Congress-led MUA-II government as an “expert” in sabotaging peace talks even as it added that the Centre was its only “hope” now.
“The Meghalaya government is an expert in sabotaging peace talks and breaking them apart. It is evident in the occurrence of political activities,” outfit publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement issued on Wednesday.
The proscribed outfit was referring to the alleged mishandling of the peace settlement and non-issuance of rehabilitation package to the cadres of the disbanded ANVC (B), which according to it, is a gross violation of peace processes by the present government.
“This portrays that peace talks are just eyewash to bring cadres over ground and then eliminate after using them for political gains,” Nongtraw said while pointing out to the allegations made by ANVC.B political secretary on nexus between the chief minister and the leaders of the parent ANVC.
Accusing the chief minister Mukul Sangma of breaking his commitments, he said, “Though Meghalaya consists of Khasis-Jaintias and Garos, but the way Dr Mukul is pushing development into his own constituency signifies that he doesn’t represent the Garo people but only himself. He (CM) has been the most selfish leader of all times.”
Stating that the HNLC was promised by the CM and the Governor to come to the mainstream, Nongtraw said, “But those were blatant lies. We do not trust the leadership of a CM who used extremist groups to make his political career but when the time becomes convenient for the groups to come to the mainstream, the CM built walls instead of bridges.”
He further alleged, “The CM is an architect of state political conspiracies. He is an expert in sabotage and manipulative policies. The HNLC leadership has lost all its faith on the CM and the government of Meghalaya. The only hope left with us is the Government of India.”
Referring to the recent statement by the BSF which revealed that the HNLC had more camps than GNLA and ULFA in Bangladesh, the outfit leader however said the proactive police department time and again claimed that the outfit no longer exists.
“We do not want to engage ourselves in illegal activities. We realise that we had our merits and demerits in our path to achieve our aims and objectives,” Nongtraw added.
With regards to GNLA chairman Champion R Sangma, who secured bail recently after serving four years in jail, Nongtraw however alleged that the state machinery manipulated his freedom and made complications instead.
“We are afraid that the police department may come up with strategies to either eliminate Sohan D Shira or Champion. The same thing may happen to the leaders of ANVC and its breakaway fractions,” he said while claiming that the recent encounter of Norok Momin was also “stage managed” and it was a clear cut policy of the police department’s fake encounters.
Meanwhile, the HNLC also stated that the Meghalaya government by its sheer will of sabotaging peace talks will invite more bloodshed in the Khasi Jaintia and Garo hills.
“When peace is not welcomed, then violence remains the ultimate solution. It is not hard to predict that the fate of Sainkupar Nongtraw and Bobby Marwein shall be the same,” Nongtraw added.
