SHILLONG, DEC17: East Khasi hills district SP M Kharkhrang informed that it has come to the notice of the police that few local businessmen have been served with a demand notice of Rs10 lakhs by the proscribed HNLC even as he warned action will be taken against anyone who pays up or help the militant outfit.
Kharkhrang told reporters during a media conference on Wednesday, “That acknowledgement for such payment will be given in the name of some non existing ‘Sports Club’.” He said the public, especially business community, must be reminded that the declaration of HNLC as an Unlawful Association has been extended bv the union government w.e.f from 16th November, 2014 and, therefore, any assistance given to them in cash or in kind will amount to contravention of the Unlawful Activities{Prevention) Act, 1967 and make such donor liable for prosecution under the act.
Kharkhrang also requested the businessmen who got the demand note to come forward and share the information with police assuring them of utmost confidentiality.
Kharkhrang also warned that if the police gets evidence of any person assisting HNLC in cash or in kind, legal action will be taken against such donor.
Kharkhrang also said that another type of crime has been detected in other states where callers asked for details of insurance policies, lapse policy and other financial details from customers. He, however, said this type of crime has not been reported in any part of the district but as a preventive measure public are requested not to give their financial details to anyone over phone or mobile but should contact their insurance company/bank before giving any details.- By Our Reporter
