HNLC rebuts police claim

SHILLONG, MAR 17: The HNLC has said that the youths arrested by the police recently in Upper Shillong did not have any links with the outfit and said that it suspects that it is just a ploy of the police department to demoralise youths who wants to join the council.  HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a press statement that it is surprising to not that even a Sumo’s driver  and a person working at the border have not been spared by the police department as they too have been arrested.

Nongtraw said, “This kind of false accusations would in fact make youths more frustrated and inclined towards joining the council.”

Nongtraw term the arrest as pure harassment and said that the Hynniewtrep belonging to the Bangladesh border are frequently targeted by the police.

Nongthraw said that is sad that the efforts by civil societies to get a repeal or amend the Indian draconian laws like Unlawful Activities Prevention Act(UAPA) and counter-terrorism laws are ignored by the Hindustan government. He said but the government enacts new laws which are abuse by the ssecurity forces and these new laws are enacted without any serious public discussion.

Nongtraw said the UAPA and counter-terrorism laws have been widely misused to target tribal groups, religious and ethnic minorities. For instance, state police have used the UAPA to round up suspects after every attack simply because they had been previously charged – but not convicted of membership of unlawful organisation.

Nongtraw claim that the misuse of section UAPA on innocent youths will aggravate the situation. He also informed that following the passage of amendments in 2008, Human Rights Watch wrote a detailed report discussing the problematic provisions and offering recommendations to the Indian government to prevent abuses.

Nongtraw said that the Human Rights Watch asked the Indian government to revise the definition of terrorism and ensure that restrictions on organisations are not impose and respect the right to freedom of association under international law.

Nongtraw also said the HNCL feels that corruption has become a booming industry and  the state is full of government officials and politicians who are corrupt and responsible for  unemployment of youths in Meghalaya. He said the education scam is one such example where an eligible candidate could not get job while those who are not eligible get the job through bribe.

Nongtraw said the Congress government is also responsible for unemployment as those involved in such scandals are roaming about scot free in luxury vehicles with red beacon lights. He felt that employment generation has become an issue of life and death for the Hindustan democracy, but the government instead of generating employment is busy generating money for their own party and their own families.

Nongtraw also feels that the population growth of outsiders in the Hynñiewtrep is also a major cause of concern for the ethnic minorities and there the growth of the Hynñiewtrep population is also necessary in order to outnumber the outsiders and ILP is the only solution. He said the family planning policy by the government against minorities is just a drawback.

Nongtraw also said that the HNLC respects the statement made by Rev PBM Basiawmoit but felt this kind of statements made just before the elections will not yield any fruits. He said the HNLC needs serious people to solve serious problems and are daring and bold to be with the HNLC even if the council is at its
weaker or stronger stage.

Nongtraw said the HNLC struggle would continue and with a lot of military action in the near future he said the government juncture would be responsible for the negative outcomes.

Nongtraw also said that the HNLC is proud to inform that it is getting stronger day by day and hundreds of youths are showing their eagerness to join the council and its political armed struggle.- By Our Reporter
