HNLC hoists flag, plant grenade

Shillong, August 14: On the day of its silver jubilee, the proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) not only hoisted its flag but also planted a grenade in Phudjaud village in the newly created South West Khasi Hills on Tuesday.
According to the police, the flag was hoisted around 1 am on Tuesday and a fuse was attached at the bottom of the flag with a warning that whoever tries to uproot the flag they will die. The HNLC cadres also fired in the air before fleeing the place.
The police had cordoned off the area and called the bomb squad who immediately came and defuse the live grenade.
South West Khasi Hills deputy commissioner Aldous Mawlong told Oh! Meghalaya said that the area has been combed by the police and the parade ground has been sanitized. He informed that nobody has been arrested so far.
According to the police, eyewitness said that the flag was hoisted by around five boys at around 1 am on Tuesday.
In the evening the HNLC issued a statement to the local newspapers saying that the militant outfit will continue to fight for the welfare of the indigenous community, but also indicated that the outfit was ready to hold talks with the union government if the latter was serious. – By Our Reporter
