SHILLONG, JUNE 12: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) on Sunday said it has decided not to boycott this year’s upcoming Independence Day celebration in the state as it expressed optimism that the centre would soon initiate a “political dialogue”.
In a statement, HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said, “Now that we have hope in Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister of State Kiren Rijiju for solving our problem for a political dialogue, we have decided not to boycott this year’s ID celebrations as a gesture and proof that we want peace.”
“This step is taken to convince the PM that we are open to commitment on peace irrespective of what the chief minister of Meghalaya thinks or does,” he added.
Maintaining that the outfit stand firm to its principles and ideology, which is to defend the rights of the people and the soil, the HNLC said that simply surrendering like newborn outfits should not be expected at any cost.
“If the Government of India is willing then we are ready to go for a political dialogue with the GOI and according to its instructions,” Nongtraw said.
He added, “The CM’s ego is more important to him than anything else. Let him live with his ego, but we as an organisation of armed struggle shall keep the interests of our ‘Jaidbynriew’ as our sole and primary concern.”-By Our Reporter
