Shillong, Dec 5: After two attacks on Garo hills based politicians- Community & Rural Development minister Saleng Sangma and former Meghalaya deputy chief minister and Meghalaya Congress working president Deborah Marak- in just about a month by militants in Garo hills, Meghalaya home minister HDR Lyngdoh has directed the police Wednesday to pull up their socks and go hammer and tongs after the militant groups.
Deborah Marak was gheroed and warned by the ANVC (B) not to campaign in East Garo hills after the militants fired in the air during the prize distribution ceremony of a football final and the GNLA militants had lobbed a grenade in Saleng Sangma’s residence in Tura that exploded and destroyed the wall and window panes. Both the incidents happened in November when the assembly election is just two months away.
The daring attacks by militants on politicians in Garo hills are the precursor of what is in store in Garo hills in the run-up to the elections and politicians of different hues have expressed concern over what may be in store during the election canvassing when the election date is announced.

To control the spiraling militants related activities in Garo hills, home minister HDR Lyngdoh Wednesday held a security review meeting with the five Deputy Commissioners and Superintendent of Police (SPs) East, West, South, North and South West Garo hills at the Tura Circuit house where he is understood to have directed them to neutralize the militants.
An official who was part of the meeting also said that the government decided to scale-up security in all the five districts of Garo hills.
The meeting also decided that the state police should co-ordinate with Border Security Force (BSF), CRPF and other security agencies to control militants’ activities. Adequate security coverage to politicians and candidates who are busy with touring programmes for elections will also be provided.- By Our Reporter
