SHILLONG, JULY 21: A huge cache of heroin and opium straw powder were seized from the three persons in an eating joint along the Meghalaaya- Assam border in Ri-Bhoi district on Saturday last. The seizure is worth around Rs 28 lakhs.
After receiving a tip off the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) sleuths of Meghalaya and Assam swooped down on Saturday evening and seized huge quantity of opium and other banned items from an eating joint in Marwet area, official sources informed.
About 20 kg of opium and 105 kg of poppy straw powder were seized from the owner and two of his aides of one of the roadside eating joint along the Shillong – Guwahati road.
The eating joint owner has been identified as M Singh and his aides K Kalita and Jasbir. All the three have been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS).
The arrest came after five persons in Guwahati were arrested with five kg of the banned substances.
Narcotics Control Bureau officials said the opium was smuggled from Indo-Myanmar border via Manipur and into Guwahati and its outskirts before being smuggled into the rest of the country.- By Our Reporter
