NONGPOH, APR 13: Umsning area headmen under the umbrella of Umtrew River Protection Committee (URPC) on Saturday served one deadline to Meghalaya Agrovet Private Limited urging the company to remove all the waste product released to the river which is a source of drinking water to several villages under Umsning area.
The local headmen of several villages led by F Nongkseh, Chairman of URPC, and local headman of Lumnongrim Dewlieh Eddie G. Kharbai on Saturday carried out spot inspection to assess the unscientific poultry farming that the waste product were released to the river.
The Meghalaya Agrovet Pvt, Ltd has constructed big poultry farming at Mawthei village under Ri-Bhoi district, which was strongly opposed by the headmen as the company openly released the feces of chickens into the river without constructing any sewage treatment plant to prevent wastes flowing into the river.
“Umtrew River is one of the biggest sources of drinking water for several villages, but the unscientific poultry farming of the Company may cause health hazard for the local people of villages” Chairman of URPC F Nongkseh said after the spot inspection.
Nongkseh also said that the local headmen of several villages has threatened the company to stop releasing feces of chickens to the river and to construct the sewage treatment plant within the stipulated period of one month, but if the company fails to take heed to their demand stern action will be taken on this regard.
Nongkseh further said that the headmen under the Umtrew River Protection Committee will file petition to the district court against the company as releasing feces of chickens to the river will not be accepted by the local villagers who mainly depend for drinking water from the river, he added.
Meanwhile, after the spot inspection, the Meghalaya Agrovet Private Limited doctor Hemanta Singh has assured the local headmen to construct the sewage treatment plant in the said location, so that the waste products will not flow to the river and all the waste products will be recycled in the treatment plant.- By Our Reporter
