SHILLONG, SEPT 11: The Meghalaya High Court today deferred the hearing on the criminal contempt against the Court by a former KHADC chief Adelbert Nongrum and five NGO leaders toOctober 25.
The division bench headed by chief justice Dinesh Maheshwari in its order issued on Monday said that the criminal contempt matter was posted for orders and hearing pursuant to the order dated August 21.
It may be mentioned here, the bench on August 21 has ordered charges to be framed against the five additional contemnors.
They include Anthony Kharbuli – HYC adviser, RobertJune Kharjahrin – general secretary, Donboklang Kharlyngdoh – vice president, Nickson Dohling – organizing secretary, and Issac Basawiamoit – asst organizing secretary.
The HYC leaders were impleaded in a case related to the derogatory and defamatory statement against the Court made by the former KHADC chief Adelbert Nongrum in 2015.
Earlier, charges against Nongrum, who is the principal contemnor had already been framed on May 18.
During the hearing, the principal contemnor and the other contemnors were also present in person.
However, a request for adjournment is made by the counsel JM Thangkhiew with the submissions that the arguing counsel for the other contemnors K Paul has not been able to attend the Court today for indisposition.
It was also submitted that the other contemnors would be availing of the opportunity extended by the Court for filing of further statement of defence and they may be granted some more time for the purpose.
The principal contemnor, the public prosecutor and the counsel for CBI have no objection.
Nongrum as also the counsel appearing in this matter, however, pray that the matter may be fixed around the last week of October, 2017.
Having regard to the circumstances of the case and the submissions made, time prayed for is allowed, the bench said while directing that the matter be listed for orders and hearing on October 25.
