Hardcore HNLC lays down arms

Shillong, Sept 18: A hardcore cadre of the proscribe Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) today surrendered with arms before the Border Security Force (BSF) at a surrender ceremony in the BSF headquarter Tuesday.

“Jingkyrmen Wanniang alias Tom (30) who joined the HNLC way back in December 2002 agreed to surrender and join the mainstream of the society after being motivated and persuaded by BSF intelligence team,” BSF DGP PC Sharma said.

He said, “BSF is taking all out effort to motivate those people who have joined insurgency groups to come back to the mainstream.”

Speaking to reporters here, Tom said, “I decided to surrender and go back to my village and live with my family” adding “I face a lot of difficulties in my stay for nine years in the jungles of Bangladesh.”

He said, “I joined the outfit due to financial problems which my family can’t afford to provide me.”

Tom underwent arms training in the year 2003 at Arsumer camp in Rangamati Chittagang, Bangladesh and has involved in extortion drives in the state. However later in 2009 he shifted to Shrimangal area of Moulavibazar district.

Tom, who  hails  from Mawpdai village, Mawsynram in East Khasi hills district was also closely associated with HNLC area commander of Dawki Hep Khoit.

He said, “When he first joined, there were more than 200 cadres” adding “At present there are only 50 cadres from his batch in the HNLC camp in Bangladesh with 30 newly recruits, as most of them have surrendered.”He informed that according to his knowledge, the outfit is having 10 AKs.

The surrendered cadre revealed that the cadres had to work in beetle leaves orchards for survival.

“We were not even given enough financial support by the outfit in times of medical emergency,” he said even as he added that they would only be given Rs 500 for treatment of minor sicknesses.

According to him, most of the cadres live in Khasi dominated villages in Bangladesh besides the jungles. He informed that there are two more cadres who have expressed their desire to come forward and surrender.

However, the surrender cadre said he doesn’t have any knowledge about the outfit linked with the GNLA even as he said that it was only in 2010 that HNLC chief Bobby Marwein visited their camp.

He is being further handed over to police for further action.

“We believe that government will do the necessary thing to rehabilitate him,” a senior BSF official said. – By Our Reporter
