SHILLONG, SEPT 26: Hynniewtrep A’chik National Movement (HANM) president Lamphrang Kharbani along with nineteen others was arrested by East Khasi hills policeon Thursday for their alleged involvement in burning down government offices.
Kharbani was arrested from Mawkasiang in East Khasi hills district. Those arrested also includes the HAMN general secretary, leaders from Jaintia hills and West Khasi hills district which included its president Arphul Kharbani.
East Khasi hills SP (City) Vivek Syiem informed that these activists were arrested from the residence of the HANM president while they were have meeting to chalk out programmes for committing arsons in the different places. “They are also involved in arson case in Shillong.” he said . Police are interrogating them.
East Khasi hills SP M Kharkhrang further informed that police have conducted raid at the residence of the president of the organization to arrest the HANM-West Khasi hills members which were wanted by police. He said, “The accused were caught while they were having their meeting.”
Meanwhile, West Khasi hills district SP S Nongtnger informed over the phone that police have been hunting for Arphul Kharbani for his involvement in burning of three government offices on Monday in his district. The three offices which Kharbani was involved in burning are PWD, KHADI and Fisheries departments. The incidents took place during the hours of the office picketing called by them in the district.
Police said three cases have been registered against the leaders under section 447/448/436 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and 89 (A) of the MMPO Act.- By Our Reporter
