Shillong, Sept 27: Meghalaya Governor Ranjit Shekhar Mooshahary described Meghalaya as the “worst mining state” in the country for total disregard to scientific methods of mining and absence of a mining policy. He said, “The government is not yet ready with the mining policy.”
Inaugurating the two-day long UGC-sponsored national seminar on “Mining: Impact on
Economy, Ecology, Technology, Polity and Society” organized jointly by Sankardev college and BBS college at Hotel Pinewood Thursday, Mooshahary said “Meghalaya is a case in point of the worst state in the entire country with regard to mining as there is no security to life of the
workers at the mines and it is also a big threat to the environment”.
Mooshahary lamented that the state government is not ready with the mining policy yet which is must in order to protect the environment in the state”.
Mooshahary observed that mining of coal, which Meghalaya has a rich deposit, has not benefitted the society as a whole and instead said that he foresaw a great threat to environment. He iterated that it was the duty of the miners to fill the gap in the land with earth after mining so
that the land can be reused for the cultivation purposes.
Mooshahary, however, said in Meghalaya the land is left open as nobody feels the crater after mining the coal.
Speaking about the controversial uranium mining Mooshahary said, “Uranium is the most environment friendly and it is essential and we should take care of local needs like establishing of hospitals, employment of locals, and filling up the craters after mining.”
Mooshahary said that the state will stand to benefit if there is uranium mining as Meghalaya will be getting subsidies on the power generated through uranium. He wondered why the people staying in Shillong are opposing the uranium mining as they do not lose anything but stand to gain since they will be getting power at a cheaper rate”-By Our Reporter
