Guv steps in, wants NE students safety

Shillong, Feb 12: Meghalaya governor KK Paul on Wednesday wrote to the union government and Delhi police to take adequate steps to ensure that students from the north eastern region, including Meghalaya, lives in peace and harmony in the national capital after the recent racial attacks that resulted in the death of a 19 years old Arunachal Pradesh student Nido Taniam.

A letter written by Paul to the union home minister on Wednesday reads, “I urge upon the union government as well as the Delhi police to take adequate steps to create a conducive atmosphere for people from the North East to pursue their studies and occupations at Delhi and elsewhere in the country in peace and harmony.”

While welcoming the CBI inquiry instituted to investigate the death of Nido Tania, Paul who is the former Delhi police commissioner said, “I am sure the home ministry is addressing this issue in all seriousness.”

Paul said that the recent cases of violence and racial discrimination against the people from north eastern states residing in Delhi has triggered a sense of insecurity to the people of the region staying in the country’s capital, he was of a strong opinion that there is an urgent need to allay this fear and create a conducive atmosphere for them to continue living there.

Paul letter said, “A large number of students from Meghalaya in general and Shillong in particular are in Delhi for their studies or employment. It is therefore necessary to allay their concerns immediately.” – By Our Reporter
