Shillong, November 30: Meghalaya governor KK Paul suggested to the St Mary’s college authority to focus on the importance of women education as it has several advantages and can lead to progress and achievement of the community which will further transform the society.
Speaking as the chief guest during the platinum jubilee celebrations of St. Mary’s College grand finale on Saturday he congratulated the college on reaching such an important milestone and remarked how the college had witnessed major historical milestones of the country starting from the colonial rule, freedom struggle, India’s Independence and creation of the state of Meghalaya and how the college has remained resolute in its mission to serve the young women of the state and the region.
Paul also released the Platinum Jubilee Souvenir which highlighted the 75-year journey of the college from its inception, the various challenges that it had to overcome, the milestones it achieved and its current standing.
Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma also graced the occasion as the guest of honour in the presence of Arch-Bishop of Shillong Arch Diocese Rev Dominic Jala. The theme of the Platinum Jubilee Celebration was Celebrating the Roots of Tradition, while Moving Towards a New Dawn.
Paul also congratulated the college on being recognized at the national level with accreditations of A grades by the national Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) in 2005 and 2011. He also mentioned about the colleges Star College Status accorded to it by the department of Bio-Technology, Government of India in 2013.
Sangma also expressed his gratitude towards the management and principal of the college for their hard work, dedication in providing quality education to the students of the region. He observed that this premiere college is one of the most sought after by the people of the region and Shillong brands itself as the centre of education hub with the presence of various prestigious institutions in the area.
Sangma also urged the students to have their goals set and be motivated in order to contribute to the society at large.
The grand finale marked the end of the year-long celebration which included Inter College Singing Competition, Inter College Basketball Competition, Inter College Debate Competition, Inter College Quiz Competition, Half Marathon, National Seminar, Youth Development Seminar which were organized by the college.
During the function the students performed Rhythms of North East showcasing the diversity of the rich and varied cultures and folk dances of North East India. The achievers from St. Marys College was also felicitated and honoured for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the society. – By Our Reporter
