TURA, JULY 25: A 46-year old man from Assam’s Mancachar area was killed on Thursday by unidentified gunmen in the outskirt of Tura town in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills.
His body was found yesterday evening by police from Aglanggre village under Rongram development block, about 7 km from Tura. West Garo hills SP Mukesh Singh said, “His throat was slit and his mouth was tied up. We have registered a case of murder and robbery. Police is investigating the matter. No one has been arrested so far”.
An FIR was filed on Friday by the relatives at Araimile police station.
Post-mortem was conducted today and his body was handed over to his relatives from Jhowdanga village, about 5 km North of Mancachar town in Assam’s Dhubri district.
The deceased identified as Sohidur Islam was working at a construction site at Aglanggre village, along with seven others. Mohammad Khabirul Islam, head of the construction labourers narrated the horrific act of the gunmen. He said, “Three armed gunmen came to our site yesterday at around 7 pm. After Iftar, we were preparing our dinner for the night.
The construction workers’ head said, “ The gunmen, who covered their face demanded money, we gave them Rs. 13000 cash. They were not satisfied and said that they would abduct the head mistry, I told them, he is not there but they suspected that Sohidur bhai was the head and abducted him”.
Of the eight labourers at the construction site, Sohidur was the eldest of all.
He also informed that the gunmen searched their pockets and took away his mobile phone, after which one of the gunmen left taking Sohidur along with him and after three minutes the other two also left.
Further he revealed that the gunmen had two pistols each and made all attempts to scare them. He said, “They told us not to report the matter to anybody. After they left, we sought villagers help and called up our owner Bikash Marak. Villagers were very cooperative and they began search immediately”.
At Aglanggre village, people were horrified with the incident. They have condemned the barbaric killing of an innocent person.
Local residents told this correspondent that when the labourers sought their help, they assured all cooperation. “In groups, villagers kept searching, as they gunmen held Sohidur captive. They had no vehicle, so we sure that they will not be able to take him deep inside the jungle.
On Monday, a labour Sahed Miah from Mancachar town was also found dead near Montford Education Centre, on the outskirt of Tura. His murder had created ripples in Mancachar and its neigbouring area.
Protest were staged against rising insurgency, kidnapping and murder in Garo hills in neigbouring Hatsingimari Sub-Division of Assam’s Dhubri district.
In the last two months, at least 14 people were abducted, of which the body of two have been found. Most daily wage labourers working in Garo hills are from Assam’s Dhubri and Goalpara district.- By Our Reporter
