SHILLONG, OCT 16: In yet another twist to the political shenanigans in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), the Chief Executive Member (CEM) Adelbert Nongrum reverse his decision to drop Nongskhen MDC Grace Mary Kharpuri from the Executive Committee saying it will hurt the “prestige” of the district council if she is replaced.
On Wednesday, Nongrum during the meeting of the All Regional Parties Alliance (ARPA) had succumbed to the demand of the HSPDP by dropping Kharpuri for accommodating one of the party’s MDC. However a day later he decided to reverse his decision.
“I had to use my prerogative as council’s chief to safeguard the reputation of the KHADC which has almost remain defunct for the past two months due to the ongoing political instability,” Nongrum said during on Thursday.
The HSPDP mounted pressure on Nongrum to accommodate one more of their MDC in the EC and re-send the list of Executive Members (EM) to the Governor, who had just approved the list on Wednesday.
“If I have to send the list again, what impression will this have upon the prestige of the KHADC. It will hamper the status of the council which I don’t want it to happen,” Nongrum, also a leader of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) said.
The HSPDP had directing its two MDCs who were already accommodated as EMs in the new EC not to take up the posts till its demand was fulfilled.
The decision of Nongrum also came after the HSPDP supremo Hoping Stone Lyngdoh and the parliamentary party leader PK Pangniang met him on this issue on Thursday.
Stating that he respect the proposal of the HSPDP, Nongrum however said, “I assured the coalition partner that I will take up necessary step on the matter (demand) only after the upcoming session of the council.”
The KHADC session is likely to commence from October 28.
Nongrum said the Nongskhen MDC will continue to be the EM in the new EC as was decided in the list sent to the Governor. – By Our Reporter
