SHILLONG, SEPT 8: Urban Affairs minister Ronnie V Lyngdoh on Thursday said the department will explore all available scientific-interventions for addressing the problem related to waste management.

“We will have to look into the scientific interventions available and use of advance technologies to resolve waste management issue. We may also get experts who have successfully used such technology elsewhere to use it here,” Lyngdoh told reporters on Thursday.

He said the government is exploring the possibility of generating wealth from waste and this methods have found to be successful in some parts of the country.

The minister had separate meetings with the delegation of the FKJGP Mawlai circle and traditional heads led by UDP Mawlai legislator Embhahlang Syiemlieh and the Mawlai Block Congress Committee (MBCC).

Both the delegations expressed concern over the present condition of the only existing and oldest dumping site at Marten.

The delegation of the MBCC led by its president PT Sawkmie, who is also KHADC Dy CEM, have suggested the need to shift the dumping ground to other places.

The other delegation led by opposition UDP MLA demanded the government to speed up construction of fencing at Marten which will ensure there is no overflow of waste to the National Highway. They have also suggested that a place called Lynti-rim be made as entry point for garbage trucks to enter and exit from the dumping ground.

Welcoming the suggestions, Lyngdoh said, “I have told the delegation that being a new minister in-charge of the department I would require sometime to examine and study what are the earlier decisions taken on the issue.”

On the demand for shifting the dumping ground from the existing site, the minister however said the government had earlier identify an alternative site at Umsawli which was opposed by local people. “I will still have to examine this before taking any decision,” he added.

Earlier, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) had agreed to fund the state for the upgradation project of the Marten which may cost between Rs 30 to 40 crore.

The minister informed, “The ADB if it yet to sanction the funds but may do very soon for installing some mechanism to address the issue relating to waste disposal.”-By Our Reporter
